Wayne Golden is a pastor who has traveled to Haiti numerous times since the 1970’s when he helped establish a primary school in Leogane. His church has faithfully supported this school for many years.
Wayne joined the Board of Directors of Promised Provision Ministry in March 2009. That same month, he joined us in Haiti as he led a team of six missionaries from his congregation to assess the needs of the girls in the Christian Home for Girls and pastors in Leogane and surrounding areas.
From his vantage point as director of the international prayer ministry, Global Intercessory Prayer, Wayne shares his impressions of the needs of the people in Haiti as well as his beliefs about how best to meet those needs:
“Haiti presents many challenges as our team of seven from our church, Congaree Baptist, soon discovered. One of the most obvious challenges was how do we prioritize all the needs we discovered during our short stay?
The people are physically and spiritually hungry. Their suffering goes far beyond what human eyes can see. There is a gentleness that flows from their eyes and even their touch, yet desperateness is heard in their voices and often marks their facial expressions.
They need Bibles, they need a caring touch, they need food and shelter. Every day they need a fresh supply of hope. They need the kind of hope that will cause them to believe their lives can be better -- the kind of hope that reminds them God has not forgotten them.
Jesus is the only source for this kind of hope. How can we give them the hope that Jesus offers? We can be with them, love them! We can tell them about Jesus. We can meet as many of their physical needs as possible. However, prayer weaves the basket that will carry the biggest load of hope!
Prayer will do several things.
First, it will open our hearts to God’s heart and allow us to love these people the way He loves them.
- Second, prayer will cause us to roll up our sleeves and jump right in the middle of these peoples’ daily lives and work side-by-side with them.
- Third, through prayer and prayer alone God will pull down the spiritual strongholds that keep these people in spiritual darkness!
- Fourth, through prayer God will call these people to Himself and open their hearts to the powerful message of the Cross! Prayer moves God to move people.”
