On October 21, 2008, PPM staff members rushed Sandra to the local U.N. outpost for help. The U.N. was able to summon an ambulance to transport her to a hospital. Unfortunately, our team found it necessary to transport her to three hospitals betweenLeogane and Port-au-Prince before it was successful in securing medical assistance. Many hospitals have closed because they were under-funded by the government and could no longer pay the medical staff.
Our team then encountered additional challenges at the private hospital where Sandra was finally admitted. The doctor's examination revealed that Sandra’s right legwas broken in two places, she had a fractured pelvis and her hips were dislocated. Thehospital had no blood bank and the doctors refused to do surgery until they had three units of blood on hand, so Sandrawaited four days until our team was able to secure enough blood for her surgery.
Sandra endured a four-and-a-half hour surgery, a two week hospital stay, five months of being bed-ridden then in a wheelchair and enduring excruciatingly painful bi-weekly outdoor bathing and antiseptic application before being returned to the Sandra we know and love who is once again capable of walking and even dancing with the best of them!! She rode it all out with true grace!
We give all praise and glory to God for Sandra’s miraculous and completerecovery! Sandra would have died had PPMstaff not been on hand to assure that shereceived transportation and proper medical care. Additionally, we are told that most people who suffer fractures of this type in Haiti are normally crippled for life which, inHaiti, consigns one to a life of begging. We are honored that God used us to save the life of this wonderful girl!!
We thank all of the girls in our home who flocked to Sandra’s side and meticulously cared for her for the five months she was bed- and wheelchair bound.
We also extend our undying gratitude to Dr. HANS LARSEN for the dedication, skill and love with which he treated Sandra and for the friendship we have forged with him throughout her ordeal. God truly does work all things to the good of those who love Him! |
