I never thought God would send me to Haiti. My biggest fear about God’s Will for my life had always been that He would someday send me to Africa. I had been stationed in Africa during my tenure in the military and did not relish the idea of being called to serve the rest of my life in that unbearable heat.
I was deployed overseas in December 2004 when my wife, Rebecca, told me she was going to Haiti for visit a child she was sponsoring through a child relief organization. Upon her return she told me that she felt God was calling her to serve Him in Haiti.
I thought, “Good for you, but don’t expect me to come along”. When I expressed this sentiment to friends, they began telling me that if God gives one spouse a vision and places a calling on their life, He will not call the other spouse in a different direction. One friend joked with me saying, “You might as well just pack your suitcase and head to Haiti!” But I kept wanting to believe that God did not want me to go to Haiti.
In 2006, Rebecca founded Promised Provision Ministries in response to the Holy Spirit’s leading. She had been making visits to Leogane, Haiti, and during those visits had spent time with Darline, a young girl that had been assigned to keep her company. Over the course of their visits, Rebecca and Darline fell in love with each other and in early 2008 we decided to adopt her.
One of the requirements for Haitian adoption is that both parents personally meet the child at least once, so in March 2008 I traveled to Haiti to meet Darline. Sometime during that visit I fell in love with Haiti and its people. I even found myself thinking, “Wow, I could live in Haiti if only I had air-conditioning and a building with screens on the windows!”
I am now sold out for God’s calling on our lives. I love the girls we are caring for in the the Christian Home for Girls, I love Haitian food (I am all about food!), and I love the idea that I am doing God’s Will.
Jerry is a quietly confident, natural leader who possesses the ability to instantly place people at ease. His sense of humor and highly competitive nature contribute to many fun games of Uno, Jenga and Twister with our girls (along with lots of joking accusations from both sides of “Voile” -- cheating!). He is a prayer warrior who tirelessly holds us and the people we serve before the Lord.
